As we observe Transgender Day of Remembrance, we want to share an inspiring story from one of our dedicated team members. This person, who works directly with people with developmental disabilities, has shown courage not only in their journey as a trans person but also in their unwavering dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone they support.
In their role as a residential assistant manager, this team member faced a challenging personal decision.
“There came a time when I debated about being out and open to the parents and the people we support,” they shared. “I opted not to be after thinking it over. There are two main reasons for this. There’s possible discrimination. I didn’t want the parents to feel a certain way, and my focus is on the people we support. It’s not about me.”
Over time, as they became more comfortable, they shared their identity with select staff members, who responded with kindness and respect. Their experiences have brought them a deeper understanding of identity and self-expression.
“My knowledge base and life experiences have helped the work I do,” they said. “Without saying that I was trans, I was able to help the people we support with the different challenges they face.”
In one instance, this staff member was able to support a person who receives services to explore clothing choices that aligned with their gender identity, helping them feel more comfortable and authentic.
When asked what they’d like more people in our community to know, they positively focused on the need “just to be kind to each other” as well as the importance of being aware of the trans experience and the challenges people may face.
Respecting a person’s choice of pronouns is important as acknowledgment of a different life experience, they added.
To foster a more inclusive community, they “think a better understanding of what trans folks go through” is important.
“As a result of transitioning, I’ve had to find new friends and new places to hang out. I didn’t speak to my family for a certain amount of time because they wouldn’t speak to me. I think a better understanding of what we go through could help bridge that gap,” they said.
This story is just one example of how our staff members bring empathy, understanding, and dedication to their work, enriching the lives of the people they support and fostering a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.
