Agency volunteers were recognized for sharing their time and talent during the Volunteer Recognition Dinner on June 18. The yearly event celebrates the individuals and organizations who enrich our programs and create meaningful experiences across AHRC Nassau.  

Over the years, volunteers have made lasting contributions, from supporting Wheatley Farms & Arts Center to leading recreational events and building one-to-one connections that help people to pursue their interests and build relationships. 

During the event, the AHRC team was proud to highlight five individual volunteers, whose dedication made an impact.

2026 Volunteer Award Recipients:  

Paul Mazzota 

Over the last two years, Paul has developed his green thumb nurturing plants at Wheatley Farms.  

“Most recently he expanded his expertise by participating in a six-week course with ReWild Long Island, deepening his knowledge of native plants and lending these valuable insights to the development of the new garden,” said Jerri Walker, Director of Wheatley Farms. “That garden would not have been possible without Paul’s passion, skill and thoughtful guidance.” 

Linda Zhou  

“Linda has spent many years giving back in meaningful ways,” Shaun Weathers, AHRC Nassau Vice President, said. “She’s coordinated countless events to support people and families across our organization.”  

As a founding member of The Giving Tree Family, Linda has played an important role in organizing fundraisers and contributing to recreational events including dances for the people we support. 

Delee Smith 

As an animal lover, Delee has been making an impact at Wheatley Farms, since attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Every Saturday, despite the weather, Delee comes to the farm to ensure all the animals are cared for and to help out in any way she can,” said Jerri. “In extreme temperatures, she’s chopping ice so that everyone can have access to the water. In the heat, she makes sure to keep everyone cool.” 

Emma Kurian 

Starting her volunteer journey with the agency at just 13 years old, Emma is one of the youngest people helping advance the AHRC mission. Emma regularly works with Lynne Brewer, Community Relations Liaison, helping coordinate the monthly bowling league, quarterly dances, fundraisers, and other recreational events. Emma is driven by her passion to empower people with disabilities and spark moments of joy.  

“Whether you volunteer for a few hours, or many days, your generosity has strengthened our community and helped us achieve the goals that would not have been possible alone,” Lynne said. “Thank you for your time, your enthusiasm, your patience, and your belief in what we are working to accomplish together.”

Volunteerism is deeply ingrained in the fabric of AHRC Nassau, and community volunteers play an important role expanding opportunities for the people we support.
