October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This year’s theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All,” is a signal that everyone is entitled to meaningful employment.
In our community, David Haas, Markiah Addison, and Brian Messina have found employment options that match their interests.
David Haas: Cultivating Independence Through Outdoor Work
David Haas works as a Ground Maintenance Worker for AHRC Nassau. He enjoys being outdoors in the community and getting as much fresh air and movement as possible.
Daily, he and his co-workers drive to different homes mow grass, trim bushes and maintain the curb appeal.
“I like making things neat,” said David. “We go to a lot of houses. I’m in by nine and I finish by three, then I go home.”
David’s employment success has paved the way for increased independence in his personal life. He moved out on his own and regularly enjoys quiet evenings at home. On the weekends he spends time with his parents, meeting them for dinner or outdoor activities.
Markiah Addison Pursues Her Passion for Fashion
Markiah Addison is currently a Fashion Coordinator at Estelle’s Dressy Dresses. She was always interested in fashion, makeup and hair. To her, it was important to find a job that matched her interests.
Markiah remained focused and persistent in her job search. She receives supported employment services and reached out to her Employment Training Specialist (ETS), Alexandria “Alex” Bardsley, for help identifying job prospects.
“Markiah wanted to help people pick out dresses for formal occasions,” said Alex. “She quickly gained confidence and was open to walking into these businesses to speak to employers directly.”
After applying to the boutique in April, she followed up by calling the store. The manager asked her to come for an interview the next day. Markiah was offered the job on the spot.
After just a few months of work, Markiah moved to the bridal section.
“This is a huge accomplishment, because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Markiah said.
Brian Messina: Embracing Seasonal Work and the Beauty of Tobay Beach
Over the summer, Brian Messina worked part-time as Beach Staff at Tobay Beach. He alternated between going to day program for two days and working at Tiki Joe’s, a restaurant where he restocked condiments, cleaned tables and kept the dining area tidy.
Brian works seasonally to accommodate his schedule. In the fall, he travels to Florida with his family and stays until the spring. The flexibility he has from his job is only matched by the pleasant environment.
“It’s beautiful being at the beach,” said Brian. “My favorite part is the view.”
The restaurant sits right on the sandbar and Brian loves watching the waves crashing and seeing the swimmers and surfers out in the water.
