People receiving pre-vocational services pose with staff members inside IGWTA House Candy Shoppe

Sweet treats and confidence are on the menu at IGWTA House Candy Shoppe. Each Thursday, people receiving Pre-Vocational (Pre-Voc) Services have been developing retail and customer service skills in a fun and supportive setting.

The nostalgic candy shop, whose name is an acronym for In God We Trust Always, is filled with old-fashioned treats, bright candy-colored decorations, and opportunities to learn. When owner Dawn Destine opened the shop about a year ago, she envisioned more than a place to satisfy a sweet tooth. As the mother of a child with autism, she wanted to create a welcoming space that supports connection and meaningful opportunities.

“I believe personally, and IGWTA House collectively believes, that it’s important for folks of different abilities to be seen in the community,” said Dawn. “They’re amazing. Their work ethic is amazing. I’m privileged and honored to provide the work.”

Every Thursday, five to six people arrive at the store ready to learn and get to work. On Thursday May 7, Courtney Nupp, Robert Callari, Lena Brown, and Manuel Lopez headed to the shop with Cindi Codere, their job coach, for a morning learning and teamwork.

Since the partnership launched in late fall, Pre-Voc teams have been working with Dawn and her staff to make custom gift baskets, stock inventory, and help customers with store purchases.

“I have been here twice right now,” Manuel said. “We’re doing this together.”

Manuel recently transitioned from school to Pre-Voc and is adapting to his new daytime routine. Manuel and his peers have been enjoying the time they spend at the candy store. The colorful store and positive atmosphere have been a great place for him to gain work experience.

Lena is one of the shop’s most enthusiastic volunteers. Always ready to lend a hand, she prides herself in being helpful, actionable and proactive. She completes tasks well and greets every customer with a warm smile.

For the men and women in Pre-Voc, this experience offers opportunities to build confidence, discover new interests, and develop independence. It also helps the community see how sweet authentic inclusion is for everyone.
