Two people supported by AHRC Nassau Day Services wear heart shaped glasses at the talent showApplause filled Levittown Hall as singers, dancers, comedians, and puppeteers took the stage for AHRC Nassau’s second annual Day Services Talent Showcase on Wednesday, August 25.

With 28 acts from 11 Day Services sites, the afternoon featured a wide variety of performances, with singing the most popular choice. Many contestants expressed themselves through song, from lively pop hits to heartfelt ballads, sharing their love of music with the crowd.

To prepare for the showcase, contestants spent time rehearsing with staff and, in some cases, even took the stage together.  “It’s a good reminder of why we’re here,” Chris Williams, Day Habilitation Services Director, said. “During these kinds of events, you get to see the relationship the staff have with the people they support.”

The audience at the Day Services talent showThe Bellmore Best Buddies won hearts with a lively group performance. Together they performed Ike & Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” with two singers and three people manning puppet backup dancers. The performance earned the group first place in the talent show.

Nijah White, who receives services at Freeport, took second place for a vibrant performance of Beyonce’s “Listen.” Third place went to Donna Iannone, supported at Hicksville, for her sparkling performance of “Lucky” by Britney Spears.

While the top prize winners received special recognition, everyone who took the stage earned a trophy of appreciation for their performance. Just as important as the competition was the opportunity for people to join together, cheering each other on, and discover the talents of friends.

The showcase, planned months in advance by Rosemina Silne, Alyssia Leonardi, and Sue Limiti, Activity Specialists, is now an annual event. With another successful show complete, the tradition continues to give more people the opportunity to show their talents, support each other, and take the stage.
