Three years ago, the people supported at AHRC’s Farmingdale 1 Day Services location began visiting BesTea by Hitch, a tea bar in North Babylon, for specialty teas and seasonal arts and crafts. What started as a fun community outing has become a cherished tradition. The group visits twice a year, enjoying new flavors, activities, and time with owner Joseph “Joe” DeBello.
During the September 18 visit, lemonade tea made with cotton candy oolong was on the menu, along with a fall-themed wall hanging craft project.
“I like coming here to do my things for the door,” Matt Fasano said. “I like coming here to see Joe at BesTea by Hitch. I like drinking some lemonade today and listening to my music.”
Matt worked on his craft with his friends Michelle Bontempo and Sandy Delvecchio. They talked about his upcoming birthday plans while listening to Billy Joel.
“I like to come here when they do the arts and crafts,” Michelle said. “It’s lemonade today. I remember the last time he did peach.”
While they worked, customers stopped by, ordered tea, and chatted. These trips offer opportunities for new experiences as well as connecting and taking part in the community.
Over the years, the group has developed a special bond with Joe. Last December, they presented Joe with a Heart of the Community Award and a heartfelt handwritten note.
During this visit, Joe and Michelle talked about past gatherings and the many crafts they made throughout the years.
“I love it,” Joe said. “I love that they remember everything and Laurette is amazing. She leads with her heart in this job.”
The idea to visit BesTea came from Laurette Holst, Assistant Manager at Farmingdale 1 and a customer since the shop opened 8 years ago. Laurette recommended the visit to Joe, who welcomed the idea and added a crafting project.
Laurette is always looking for opportunities for the ladies and gentlemen at Farmingdale 1 to explore Long Island and engage with their community. Past outings have included museums, The Looney Tunes Music Store, and the Bricks and Minifigs LEGO store in West Babylon.
Laurette’s commitment to promoting self-expression and community inclusion was recognized with the 2026 Direct Support Provider of the Year Award from the New York State Association of Day Service Providers (NYSADSP).
After enjoying their tea and creating their wall-hanging, everyone gathered to the front of the store to take photos with Joe before heading off to lunch and further activities.
We’re grateful to community partners like Joe who support inclusion by creating welcoming spaces where people can explore their interests, build friendships, and connect with the community.
