Bright flower necklaces, music, and plenty of opportunities to connect brought the AHRC Nassau community together for a luau-themed dinner and dance at The Sterling in Bethpage on October 14.

The celebration was the second to last dance of the year in AHRC Nassau’s recreation dance pack, which brings people together for themed dances throughout the year. Each event offers a welcoming space for people supported to reconnect with friends, create connections, and make lasting memories.

“This is what it’s all about,” Lynne Brewer, Community Relations Liaison, said. “Everyone is having a great time. It’s a luau! It’s indoors. It’s colorful and happy. Why not!”

Guests were given the rockstar treatment all night, with a catered dinner and music curated by a DJ who kept the dance floor lively with a mix of popular favorites, timeless classics, and special requests from attendees.

“I like the real fast music, not this,” Ryan Pickus joked after a slow tune was requested. “Real disco, from the upper ‘70s and ‘80s. Those are my eras. I love the disco.” Ryan, who is supported by Residential and Day Services through AHRC Nassau, regularly takes part in recreational activities, including the monthly bowling league and dance parties. During these events, Ryan enjoys catching up with all his friends who may be living with family or receiving services from different providers.

At the dance there were many activities for people to participate in. Each guest was gifted Panama hats, beaded necklaces, tiny beach balls, and hula hoops, which they loved tossing around and dancing with. There was also a photo booth which enticed many to capture memories with friends, staff, and community members.

It was an incredible evening of fun and camaraderie for all involved. As the celebration came to a close, guests received a retro fanny pack as a parting gift before heading home with memories of a wonderful night out with friends.
