Friends and neighbors gathered at the Evers Street residence on a beautiful Saturday in early May for a spring barbecue hosted by roommates Kerri Ann O’Brien, Joann Cieslik, Ann Berris, Sharon Breen, and Ellen Flynn. Guests were greeted into the backyard with music, dancing, and delicious dishes, prepared by the “Evers Team,” the thoughtful staff at the residence.
Residential Services provides more than housing and medical care for people with disabilities. Staff also offer opportunities for connection, celebration, and community life –the same experiences people associate with any welcoming home in the neighborhood.
“We love having people over,” Ann said.
Ann and Kerri spent much of the afternoon greeting guests, dancing, and making sure everyone felt welcome. Although the party was originally planned as a family gathering, staff adjusted plans when relatives were unable to attend.
“Some of their families moved away, so I said, ‘Let’s still do it to kick off the summer,’ and they said, ‘Yes,’” Elizabeth Angerville, House Manager, said.
The ladies at the Evers Street residence regularly host social events. Recently, they held a Valentine’s Day party with neighboring agency houses. Over time, the gatherings have helped foster friendships.
“I’m all about quality of life,” Elizabeth said. “I always tell my staff that we have choices , so we want to help them maximize their life—have fun, just live and have a good time. Whatever they ask for, we try to give it to them within reason. The sky is the limit”
Organizing a party and ensuring it runs effortlessly requires careful planning and teamwork. Staff from the Stewart Avenue house assisted with set up, while Hemoutie Dockery, agency RN, was there to assist in case of emergencies.
Guests from eight supported housing locations including Lee Street, Vivona Court, Bellmore Avenue, The Pines, Livingston Street, Cornwell Street, Circle Drive, and Steward Avenue spent time dancing and having fun. The night ended on a sweet note, with the Evers team setting up an ice cream bar for guests to enjoy before heading home.
On his way out, Charles Moody, who lives at the Vivona Court house, stopped to thank an Evers Steet Direct Support Professional.
“I want you to know that I had a great time,” he said. “I loved everything about it.”
